Roundhouse kick, spin kick, axe kick and reverse side kicks… These are kicks of course, and what do they relate to?
Taekwondo is one of or if not, the most popular martial art in term of practitioner all around the world. It can be sports, exercise, self defence and even philosophy. This is the reasons why schools usually include taekwondo as a co-curricular activity.
However, for people like me, that do not practice taekwondo, basically know nothing about taekwondo beside that they kicks and the belt’s colour mean their level.
But I am so lucky to know someone who has practice Taekwondo over 8 years and had a fun section with him.
Me: So John, you practice taekwondo, and mind to share with me what belt or stage are u in now?
John: I’m a Black Belt 3rd Dan.
Me: Dan? Is that a rank or level? What would be the highest?
John: Dan is the degree. The highest would be 10th Dan.
Me: Then how long it takes to complete a Dan?
John: To complete a Dan, you need to take a test and after each upgrade you will have to wait the year which is the same as your Dan, for example 1st Dan wait 1 year, 2nd Dan wait 2 year.
Me: How long had you practice taekwondo? What made u learn taekwondo?
John: I had been practicing taekwondo since 12 and so it’s already 8 years. My mom forced me to learn taekwondo at first but after that it seems to be a habit already.
Me: I see. Mind to share with me the infos about the taekwondo?
John: Of course, no problem.
Me: Taekwondo is origin from?
John: Korea.
Me: .Other than kicks, what can we use in taekwondo? Hand? Head? What are the rules in taekwondo?
John: I would say that in taekwondo is about 30% punch 70% kicks, rules are applied in competitions, such as kicks must be above waist level, no knees and elbows attacks ,only straight punches and kicks
Me: Competition? How? Rounds? Or count by marks?
John: The time depends on the competition causes the organiser can set their own rules, and of course marks also. But the marks are given by referee and that one is standardised. Only time can change, the scoring rules will always be the same.

Me: I see, how much are the apparels?
John: The apparels cost over RM 100.
Me: So what was the main idea of taekwondo? What made someone perform better in taekwondo?
John: Taekwondo’s main idea is twisting, means every joint u can turn and twist. It gives more strength to your hits and the main thing are still the hip movement cause kicks are important, and the momentum and strength depend lots from the hip.
Me: Beside training, is there any other activities?
John: Activities such as competition and exchange training will take place over the year and it’s really depends on your club on the budget, venue and the frequency of organising these activities.
Me: Thank you very much for the info. Good luck in your training.
John: You’re welcome.
Taekwondo is actually a good form of martial art, it’s also provide self-defence skills, however John also mentioned that his master advice them to run whenever got into trouble in real life.
Basically, taekwondo only take up cost for fees and apparels. And if you would like to learn taekwondo from your own, online source will always be your best teacher. However, if you would like to attend competition with these, it’s advised not to do so because you will meet people that been practicing taekwondo regularly for years. And remember stay mentally focus and strong because the training in taekwondo is never gonna be easy.
